This messianic cult that has developed around Obama is, ironically enough, in part the result of the secularization of the Left. Human beings have a built in need for belief in a higher power. A sense that there must be something greater than themselves. A feeling that there is a designer and a design. People naturally seek to connect with that power and want to know the design and to be a part of the plan. This is why G. K. Chesterton said "When people stop believing in God, they don't believe in nothing – they believe in anything". For the Left, government is their God and liberalism is their religion.
